The city of Indianapolis says it has broken ground on its first permanent supportive housing project for homeless veterans.

The $12 million near west side project call the Lincoln Apartments will be able to house 75 people in 50 one-bedroom apartments and 25 studio apartments. It's located within a mile of the Roudebush VA Medical Center.

Volunteers of America of Indiana will coordinate continuing care at the site once it opens.

A dedication ceremony is planned for Nov. 19, 2013, on the 150th anniversary of President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.

The Indianapolis Star reports the number of homeless military veterans in Indianapolis is estimated at 700 and rising.
