INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indiana man faces federal charges for allegedly making violent threats against House Speaker John Boehner.

The U.S. attorney's office in Indianapolis says 32-year-old Brandon James Thompson of New Castle appeared in court Friday. U.S. Attorney's spokesman Tim Horty says Thompson was released on house arrest.

Prosecutors say Thompson made repeated threats via email and telephone against Boehner over the House's failure to pass an unemployment extension.

Chief Federal Defender Monica Foster says Thompson has been unemployed for more than a year and his benefits ran out in January.

Prosecutors say Thompson acknowledged making the threats.

About 1.3 million Americans lost jobless benefits when the House adjourned in December without passing an emergency extension.

Court documents say Thompson has a gun permit but has a temporary protective order against him.
