Indiana State Police officer faces forgery charges

An Indiana State Police officer has been arrested on forgery charges.

Fifty-three-year-old 1st Sgt. Rick Reed of Westfield was arrested Friday. Investigators believe he forged fake purchase prices on vehicle titles so he could pay lower sales taxes.

State Police spokesman Capt. Dave Bursten tells The Indianapolis Star the crimes Reed is charged with are unrelated to his position in the state police human resources division at the agency's headquarters in downtown Indianapolis.

Reed is a 24-year veteran of the state police.

Bursten says Reed was placed on unpaid administrative leave after his arrest. He also has been suspended pending the conclusion of his trial.

If convicted, Reed will be fired and could face a prison sentence of up to eight years on each of six forgery counts.
