At least one Indiana voter says he was tempted to write in a candidate for the U.S. Senate race, and it would have been a familiar name.

Forty-six-year-old Lance McElroy of Indianapolis said he nearly wrote in Sen. Richard Lugar's name when deciding which candidate to support for Senate Tuesday because he wasn't happy with his options.

McElroy says he thinks Republican state Treasurer Richard Mourdock is an "extremist." He considers Joe Donnelly a strong candidate for Democrats but says he was turned off by the negative tone of the race.

Lugar lost the seat he's held for 36 years to Mourdock in the May primary.

McElroy ultimately voted for Libertarian Andrew Horning.

Lugar has stayed out of the race and never campaigned for Mourdock.
