Residents of Henryville are celebrating their community's survival one year after deadly tornadoes ripped through the southern Indiana countryside, chewing up dozens of homes and killing 13 people in the area.

Saturday began with a flag-raising ceremony at a local bank, followed by a parade.

WISH-TV reports hundreds of people who turned out for a commemoration ceremony crowded into the gym at Henryville High School, part of a complex rebuilt after it was largely demolished by 175-mph winds.

Gov. Mike Pence visited the town to meet residents who were injured or lost their homes in the March 2, 2012 storm. Many have lived in temporary quarters while their homes were rebuilt, while others have moved into completely new homes.

A family fair and spaghetti supper were also planned.
