WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) - A central Indiana pharmacist has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for submitting $3.5 million in Medicaid reimbursements for drugs that doctors had never prescribed for patients.

A federal judge ordered the sentence Thursday for 36-year-old Chad Shedron of Rossville who ran Family PharmaCare in West Lafayette until it closed shortly after being searched by federal agents last November.

The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/OD2YWD ) that Shedron had faced up to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty in May to health care fraud and tax evasion charges.

Shedron's attorney sought leniency, saying his wife is unable to work and can't care for their six children alone.

The judge, however, ruled Shedron must pay $3.5 million in restitution and nearly $530,000 in back income taxes.
