INDIANAPOLIS The Indiana House Education Committee is looking at a plan that would expand school vouchers for preschool-aged children.
The panel is set to meet Thursday morning to consider a preschool voucher bill from House Education Chairman Robert Behning. The measure would establish a pilot program to send low-income children to preschools in five test counties.
House Republicans and Gov. Mike Pence have said they would like to expand vouchers for preschool-aged children. Indiana approved a sweeping school voucher program in 2011 and built on it last year.
Lawmakers in both parties have been discussing early childhood education recently, but have differed on proposals. Senate Democrats called last year for the creation of a public preschool program throughout the state.
