Students from Indiana University South Bend came out to watch President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Address Tuesday evening.

Gathering in a community room with pizza and snacks, the students were anxious to hear what the president had to say.

The watch party was hosted by the American Democracy Project in conjunction with the I.U.S.B.’s Political Science Club, it brought together many of the same students who came out to watch the presidential and vice presidential debates last fall.

The televised address covered issues ranging from tax cuts and healthcare, to gun control. The students who showed up at the gathering not only wanted to view the speech but to share their opinions as well.

”It's pretty obvious that gun control does not work. As far as universal background checks, it gives the government an unfair advantage over the citizens,” said Mike Moran a junior economics major at I.U.S.B.

Lowell Ritter is a junior business and political science major, after watching the address he said, “I think if he puts more of his energy into simply working together 31.12 that that will do him a lot of good on a lot of issues not just one.”

Several of the students said they just want to see the president and congress work together to make some positive changes.
