SPENCER, Ind. (AP) A southern Indiana couple with a passion for nutcrackers is showing off their massive collection of nutcrackers in their local town square.
George and Nancy Thurston's collection of more than 500 nutcrackers is on display through Christmas inside the old Exchange Building on Spencer's town square about 45 miles southwest of Indianapolis.
Passers-by can peer through large windows at the colorful collection of soldier nutcrackers, which are fashioned from everything from wood to wax.
Some of the Owen County couple's nutcrackers light up, some play Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite." But most just stand there.
The Herald-Times reports the couple got their first nutcracker in 1981. It was a gift from Nancy's son, who was in the military and stationed in Germany, where nutcrackers originated back in the 1700s.
