Holy Week celebrations begin with Chrism Mass in South Bend

The leader of the Catholic Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend will be making several trips to Michiana in the coming days in honor of Holy Week.

Monday evening Bishop Kevin Rhoades led the Chrism Mass at St. Matthew’s Cathedral in South Bend.

The special mass is held during Holy Week in every Catholic diocese, during which the clergy of the dioceses renew their priestly vows and the bishop blesses the holy oils that will be used in Catholic ceremonies throughout the year.

“Last year I celebrated Eater in the St. Joseph County Jail, and this year I'll be celebrating two masses in the Allen County Jail in Fort Wayne, because I feel Easter is such a season of hope and joy, and I think it's important to go to those who need hope and especially to those who are imprisoned,” said Rhoades.

Bishop Rhoades will return to South Bend later on this week for a Good Friday celebration at 1:00 p.m. at St. Matthew Cathedral.
