Hesburgh Library celebrates 50 years

NOTRE DAME It's not just a big weekend for football at the University of Notre Dame. There's another celebration going on, too!

On Friday, the university will kick off the 50th anniversary of its Hesburgh Library with a special ceremony.

The 13-story building was the largest college library in the world when it opened in 1963 and is named in honor of Reverend Theodore Hesburgh – a 96-year-old priest and president emeritus after leading the university for 35 years.

The current university president, Reverend John Jenkins, is scheduled to speak at the event 4p.m. It will be held immediately before a pep rally for the Notre Dame/ Michigan State football game.
