Gun control advocates gather on courthouse steps

A group that is pushing for gun control took aim at Indiana today.

About two dozen proponents of tougher background checks for gun buyers gathered on the courthouse steps in South Bend this morning.

A recent study shows that Indiana ranks eight in the nation when it comes to the number of guns sold that end up being used to commit crimes in other states.

The gun debate is personal for Notre Dame Professor Stephen Miller.

“I had a brother that was murdered in 1972 with an illegal gun and I had a nephew that lost his life to gun violence. That's why I became more involved. After years of sitting back and
watching this I felt compelled to do my part.”

“But obviously Indiana is one of the states in the top ten in terms of many of the gun violence indicators,” says Tom Perriello with the Center For American Progress Action Fund. “It’s also a place where Senator Coats and Senator Donnelly could well be the difference in whether we get some common sense reforms through.”
