The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana is taking the battle over specialty auto license plates for a gay and lesbian youth counseling group to federal court.
The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles continued its suspension of the Indiana Youth Group's specialty plates this week after an administrative law judge ruled the plates should be reinstated. A copy of the lawsuit obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press has the ACLU claiming the agency violated due process by taking the final authority over an independent review.
The ACLU is seeking an injunction against the BMV and the reinstatement of the specialty plates. The lawsuit marks a return to federal court for the youth group and the BMV three years after a separate acrimonious battle.
