Airport officials in Gary say they've acquired the land they need for a $166 million expansion project.
The Times in Munster reports (http://bit.ly/NvlhMT ) the Gary/Chicago International Airport Authority voted Monday to accept the deed to 84 acres. The vote ended four years of negotiation and condemnation proceedings.
The authority also accepted a donation of 40 acres that will be used to offset wetlands eliminated by the expansion project.
The airport has bought more than 150 acres of land for use in the expansion project. Another 100 acres of dune and swale have been acquired to offset the environmental impact of the expansion.
Airport officials hope to complete the expansion by September 2013.
