SOUTH BEND Bargain hunters be ware, May marks the unofficial start to Garage Sale Season.
Local experts say the best months to plan and shop are May through October. Surprisingly, the best day for turnout is typically Thursday.
Heather Grabarak, who coordinates the Indoor Yard Sale at the St. Joseph County 4H Fair Grounds, says organization is key. She suggests labeling with prices and colors, hanging clothing instead of stacking them and putting furniture in the front.
"Things are getting more and more expensive," said Grabarek, "I really think a garage sale is the way to go. You can still get quality items."
Other tips Grabarek recommends to potential planners: make sure you have change, price low to go and use plenty of signage.
"It's those key words you put in your ads too," said Grabarek. "So, if you are far out in the country you might want to list out those items you have."
Experts say there is money to be made in garage sales, but you have to stay organized.
"Make sure everything is priced," said another frequent "garage saler," Tina Puzynski. "It does take a lot of time. I've been doing this three years and besides your children, it's a full time job."
Plus, these garage sale gurus say involve the kids.
"Have a car wash at your house," said Grabarek. "Have them choose their own toys they want to sell, give them their own separate table, [and] tell them, 'any money you make we can buy one new toy.'"
Grabarek says lemonade and cookie stands are also popular ideas.
