A team of Ball State University professors and students has developed an online game designed to help elementary school pupils learn what it was like to be a runaway slave traveling the Underground Railroad.

Professors Ron Morris and Paul Gestwicki led the effort to create "The Underground Railroad in the Ohio River Valley." The Star Press reports (http://tspne.ws/13IPi2K ) the yearlong project involved about 60 students.

The game geared toward fourth-graders lets students portray runaway slaves setting out on the harrowing journey north along the Underground Railroad through Indiana and other Midwestern states. They must make decisions about which way to go to avoid capture.

Morris says the creators decided to develop a game around the Underground Railroad to give teachers a new resource for a popular subject.
