Fort Wayne's mayor is asking the Allen County Commissioners to declare a state of emergency in the wake of last week's severe storm that toppled hundreds of trees and cut power to thousands of homes in the northeastern Indiana city.
Mayor Tom Henry asked the commissioners Monday to issue the emergency declaration to accelerate the process of applying for federal disaster assistance. WANE-TV reports the commissioners plan to ratify a county-wide disaster declaration at Friday's meeting.
Indiana Michigan Power reports that about 47,000 customers around Fort Wayne remained without power Monday afternoon following Friday's storm, which raked the area with winds up to 90 mph. That's about one-third of the utility's Allen County customers.
The utility says most of its customers should have power back by
late Wednesday.
