FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Residents of public housing in Fort Wayne won't be allowed to smoke in their apartments or within 20 feet of their buildings starting Jan. 1.

The Fort Wayne Public Housing Authority board of commissioners approved the smoke-free housing policy after a survey of residents found a majority of residents supported it. The rule requires each household to sign lease addendums agreeing that each household member and visitor will refrain from smoking in their apartment, anywhere in their building and within 20 feet from the building.

American Lung Association in Indiana executive director Alison Martin says the agency hopes other public and private facilities will follow Fort Wayne's lead. She cites the health benefits to residents and the cost savings in facility maintenance.
