A Fort Wayne utility official says a video an Illinois lawmaker's office posted on YouTube about Great Lakes pollution greatly exaggerates the amount of sewage overflows the Indiana city generates each year.
The News-Sentinel (http://bit.ly/PGopmL ) reports the video posted by U.S. Sen. Mark Kirk's office accuses Fort Wayne of dumping 7.5 billion gallons of sewage into Lake Erie's tributaries each year. It also lists Fort Wayne as a worse polluter than Chicago, Cleveland and Detroit.
Justin Brugger of Fort Wayne City Utilities told City Council members Tuesday the video is "patently false" and exaggerates the city's annual sewage overflows by 6.5 billion gallons.
Kirk spokesman Aaron Winters says the information came from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management.
IDEM spokeswoman Amy Hartsock says the agency is checking the data.
