Fort Wayne police are battling an increase in the number of counterfeit bills being passed as technology makes it easier to print fake currency.
The Journal Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/O0BVW4 ) police have taken more than 100 reports involving fake money so far this year. That's up from 74 in 2011.
Detective David Ladig says fake currency is easier to make and is often of a better quality than in the past because of advances in technology.
The U.S. Secret Service reports that 60 percent of the counterfeit currency passed nationally last year was produced using digital printing.
The government has added features such as watermarks and vertical security threads to bills to help combat counterfeiting. Each denomination also has microprinting in different areas.
