A fire chief says a western Indiana man told a 911 operator he had to try to save his young daughters before a fire in their home claimed the lives of all three.
Attica Fire Chief Ed O'Farrell tells the Journal and Courier the man called to say his house was filling with smoke and then said, "I've got to go try to get the girls out," but that was the last 911 heard from him.
The fire in the home about 70 miles northwest of Indianapolis killed the man and the children aged 3 and 18 months. Their names were not immediately released.
O'Farrell says a woman believed to be the wife and mother of the victims returned home as firefighters arrived and stood outside screaming for help.
