The Indiana State Department of Health wants the first day of fall Sunday to remain a safe one for Hoosiers.
Indiana and 46 other states are marking National Falls Prevention Awareness Day on the first day of the new season by calling attention to ways to prevent them.
The department says steps include regular visits to eye doctors, reviewing medications that can cause drowsiness or dizziness, and removing environmental hazards such as loose rugs, poor lighting and slippery floors.
It says slowing down can help because many falls are caused by hurrying.
Also, exercises such as walking or swimming at least 15 minutes a day can help build muscle strength and improve balance.
The department says Hoosiers age 65 and older suffered nearly 8,300 falls that required hospitalization in 2011.
