Evansville, Ind. An Evansville police officer who conducts self-defense classes on the side is starting a Bully Stopper class for schoolchildren.

Sgt. Sam Smith says he was inspired after learning a relative had been bullied and after seeing students bullied at a private school where he formerly worked.

The class will include self-defense, but he also hopes to enroll bullies themselves so they can change their ways.

Smith tells WFIE-TV that most bullies are victims themselves, so bullying becomes "a poisonous cycle." He wants bullies to understand they can help stop the cycle.

Smith hopes to get the class started next month.
