A northwest Indiana sheriff is worried the county could be forced to pay back $1.3 million if it backs out of a long-term agreement to house federal inmates.
The Times of Munster reports Porter County Sheriff Dave Lain is concerned the county would have to pay back a bonus it received as part of a 16-year agreement with the U.S. Marshal Service in 2001. Lain says the county also stands to lose $380,000 a year in income from housing the inmates.
Porter County Board of Commissioners President John Evans is worked the county is having to spend more at the jail to meet requirements specific to federal inmates. Evans says he is not convinced the county would be required to pay back the $1.3 million.
