Some police and firefighters in Elkhart say budget cuts are bogus. The Fraternal Order of Police Elkhart Lodge 52 and International Association of Firefighters Elkhart Local 338 released a joint statement Friday that said reducing the salaries of police and firefighters violates their collective bargaining agreement.
The statement also says they believe money is available in other city accounts that could cover the budget deficit.
City council members have been discussing the proposed budget all month and a vote is expected to come in the next few weeks.
