Elkhart, Ind. Elkhart Mayor Dick Moore has agreed to end a controversial sewer compact fee within the next two years.
After a three-hour meeting Thursday night, the council decided to phase in a surcharge for all commercial customers outside of the city, beginning in 2015.
According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, before Thursday night, Moore had been pushing to hold off on that surcharge until 2018.
As for next year, all customers would pay a 25 percent compact fee.
The compromise comes on the heels of a threatened lawsuit
The group Elkhart Citizens for Fair Sewer Rates says they will not file the suit, if this new compromise is made official within the next two weeks.
