An Elkhart man who faced a sentence of 80 years in prison for terrorizing his family could be free in less than six years.

Earlier this month Robert King was sentenced to 12 years in the Dept. of Corrections for a charge that carried a maximum penalty of 80 years. However, due to credit time under Indiana law, King may be released into the community in just six years.

King was convicted on three counts of criminal confinement while armed with a deadly weapon, in addition of a single count of attempted aggravated battery.

His family told the jury King had consumed numerous beers and then woke his wife at knife point demanding she tell him where $60 of the family’s money had gone.

King’s 14 year-old daughter heard her mother screaming and came to her aid, offering to pay her father the missing money. But despite her efforts the situation escalated, and as King’s daughter watched he proceeded to spray his wife with lighter fluid and attempted to set her on fire.

His attempt was unsuccessful and King’s daughter was able to calm him down as she called 911 for assistance.
