Elkhart man accused in Sept. murder appears in court

The man accused of brutally murdering an Elkhart County tattoo artist appeared in court for the first time Thursday.

Police arrested Todd Stewart, 35, Wednesday afternoon in connection with the death of Mark Miller, 44.

Miller was reported missing in September.

Two weeks later, his body was found inside a barrel in the St. Joseph River.

Police say the men were business partners.

According to the prosecutor's office, a business associate witnessed Stewart shoot Miller and then helped him put a barrel containing Miller's body into a truck.

Police also used cell phone towers and surveillance video to connect Stewart to the crime.

Stewart's trial is scheduled to begin on September 9.

He's currently being held in the Elkhart County Jail without bond.
