ELKHART, Ind. (AP) - A northern Indiana woman who contracted fungal meningitis from a steroid injection says she struggles with the disease but gains strength from talking to others in the same situation.

Terry Trost of Elkhart tells The Elkhart Truth she visits her doctor's office every Monday to monitor her health and medication intake. She has met several other patients there who are fighting the same illness.

She says some days the pain in her lower back is unbearable, she feels hopeless and has trouble falling asleep at night.

Trost received an injection for back pain a year ago at an Elkhart clinic, one of six in Indiana that received the contaminated drugs from a Massachusetts pharmacy. Federal officials say 750 people in 20 states contracted fungal meningitis and 64 people died.
