Elkhart cold case heats up as investigators find suspected rapist

It's been 25 years since a 10-year-old Elkhart resident was taken from her home sometime after 11 p.m. on March 5, 1988, raped, and then dropped back off in her neighborhood.

Wednesday investigators believe they've finally found her assailant.
Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney, Curtis T. Hill held a press conference Wednesday to discuss their findings on this case.

He said that after looking back into the case, investigators found that the DNA taken 25 years ago was still in the hands of the Indiana State Police and was still usable.

After testing, they found that it included DNA of an unknown male.

“It’s astronomical that that DNA was saved for 25 years, saved from a rape case of a 10-year-old girl where no suspect was listed. The child at the time couldn't identify him very well, we didn’t have anything else to go on. We didn’t have finger prints we didn’t have anything else,” says Chief Investigator, Ed Windbigler.

After putting that DNA into the system they were able to link it to Robert E. Quinn who was already an inmate in the Indiana Department of Correction.

“This case was done when she was a child. There was no place else for it to go, and that was back in 1988, 1989. So, moving forward to she’s in her 30’s and she is the one who picks up the phone and contacts someone and says what’s going on here, I need some information , that tells you something about that victim in this case right there,” says Elkhart County Prosecuting Attorney, Curtis T. Hill.

Quinn is currently serving time for violating his parole from a 2005 child molestation charge.

With this case he is being charged with rape, child molesting and criminal confinement and could see up to 90 more years behind bars.
Again, Quinn has been charged but has to still be found guilty in the court of law.
