Authorities say the 18-year-old driver of a car that plunged into a southern Indiana river faces a reckless homicide charge because he was speeding and driving recklessly at the time.

Tyler Ross of Seymour also faces a misdemeanor count for never having obtained a driver's license before the crash Wednesday that killed 17-year-old Booke Hawn of Seymour. She was found dead inside the car after it was pulled from the East Fork of the White River a few miles southwest of Seymour. An autopsy was planned to determine the cause of death.

Conservation officer Jim Schreck says Ross and a 19-year-old male escaped the vehicle by smashing windows.

Ross was being held on $10,500 bond at the Jackson County Jail, where records did not list a defense attorney.
