South Bend, Ind. A Notre Dame legend is taking his talents on the court to South Bend's streets.
Digger phelps spent the Wednesday evening at the Eck Visitors Center hosting a book launch, signing and Q&A session.
The former Irish basketball coach was there promoting his newest title, "Coaching the Streets,” which he co-authored with Jack Colwell.
Digger said the recent string of youth violence in the city motivated him to send a message to teens before it's too late.
“The most important thing is showing kids that there's hope and there's direction in the game of life,” said Phelps. “If you surround yourself with these kids and give to them at age six, by time they're 16, they know how to win at the game of life.”
In his book, Digger discusses his own stop youth violence initiative, w hich he launched last year.
He and other community leaders teamed up with area organizations to create mentoring programs for kids, as well as after-school programs.
