DNR reminds Indiana residents to be wary on ice

The state Department of Natural Resources is warning Indiana residents to be careful on ice.

Indiana Conservation Officers recommend that people don't fish unless the ice is at least 4 inches thick and shouldn't use all-terrain vehicles unless the ice is at least 5 inches thick.

They also remind people that lakes, ponds, rivers and streams don't freeze at the same rates, even on the same body of water. They say flowing water, sandy or vegetated areas and wind can make ice thinner.

The conservation officers say wearing a lifejacket or carrying ice hooks, rope or even a whistle can increase a person's chances of surviving if they fall through the ice. They also recommend that people don't go out on the ice on their own.
