Election officials have cleared the way for a November referendum on whether a fast-growing Indianapolis suburb should merge with its surrounding township and become a city.

The Hamilton County Election Board on Thursday let stand the wording for the referendum question for voters in Fishers and unincorporated Fall Creek Township,

The Indianapolis Star reports (http://indy.st/OuREKq ) the decision goes against a push by opponents to have votes from those now living inside and outside the current town limits counted in separate groups rather than a single unit on whether to approve the referendum.

Census figures show Fishers now has some 79,000 residents, making it one of the state's 10 largest communities and more than twice the size of any other town.
