After months of testing the viability of angled parking in Elkhart it seems that the downtown may be ready to make the switch.

According to the Elkhart Truth, Mayor Dick Moore announced that the city would see if angled parking along a six-block stretch of South Main St. would work out in providing additional spaces for shoppers.

Moore’s plan was supported by Downtown Elkhart Inc. and the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce because of its potential to boost business downtown. Within weeks of Moore’s announcement workers began painting an additional 151 angled spaces.

The Elkhart Truth reports that the change was made possible after the number of traffic lanes on Main St. was reduced from four lanes to two. One problem that has arisen with the new parking is that there is sometimes congestion near the railroad tracks and in front of the post office when a train does cross South Main.

Police in Elkhart also reported a slight increase in minor accidents in the first month after the new parking, but motorists seem to have adjusted since.

There has been positive feedback and Mayor Moore considers it a “big achievement” that, for now, is here to stay.
