Last week the South Bend School Corporation picked its best spellers, and this week it was the local Catholic schools’ turn to find theirs.
NewsCenter 16’s own Terry McFadden had the honor of announcing the 20th annual spelling bee took place at the Knights of Columbus on East Washington on Tuesday.
In total, 11 schools participated in the competition, sending 44 students in fourth through eighth grade.
One of the competition’s winners, Corpus Christi fifth grader, Anthony Nemeti, says the words were tough but thanks to a little faith, he was able to spell his way through.
“I haven't heard of half of those words to be honest with ya,” said Anthony, “I prayed a lot, I did, I prayed a lot last night, I prayed a lot during this that's what helped me most.”
Six finalists were left standing by the end of the bee, they will head to regionals at Bethel College on March 7.
