A new Gary Community School Corp. policy doesn't provide buses for high school and middle school students who live within two miles of schools and elementary school students who live up to a mile away.

District spokeswoman Sarita Stevens says it has cut its transportation budget to about $5 million. The district's transportation provider notified the Indiana Department of Workforce Development in May that it was laying off about 85 drivers and routes were being eliminated.

Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt says walking to school isn't a bad thing and parents can share stories with their children on how they walked to school.

But some parents tell the Post-Tribune for a story Sunday they worry about stray dogs and sexual predators who live along the walking routes children take to school.
