Cars line up for pill drop in Mishawaka

Michiana residents had the chance Saturday to clean out their medicine cabinets and get rid of their old or unused pills the safe and free way.

St. Joseph County Triad teamed up with local agencies for a spring pill drop.

Cars lined-up at the Mishawaka fire station along Douglas Road.

Pills were put in cardboard boxes and securely stored and then loaded onto a truck to be taken to the nearest DEA's office.

"We like to take in the liquid and pill form medications and have them properly disposed of,” said Mishawaka Police Department Capt. Robert Reppert. “Meaning incinerated, dumped down the train, down the toilet because municipalities spend thousands and thousands of dollars to provide a safe drinking environment for our citizens."

If you missed Saturday's event, officials say the next pill drop will be held around October.
