It’s opening day at Coveleski Stadium, and the South Bend Silver Hawks are gearing up for more than just a big game.
“We’re having a ball game tonight, but you’ll hardly notice,” Silver Hawks owner Andrew Berlin says.
He says the night is as much about family fun as winning the game. They’ll have everything from pony rides and a petting zoo, to face painting and fireworks.
He also cites the new tiki bar opening for the adults, all part of $1 Thirsty Thurdays. And the Hawks will give away a flat screen TV every inning.
Since taking over the team, Berlin has been focused on increasing attendance at Silver Hawks games. He says it’s already up 66 percent, and he hopes to see a similar increase for the 2013 season.
One way they aim to do that is by making the Hawks South Bend’s team.
“This is a great sports area, a great sports town,” Berlin says. “You could be seeing some great future professional baseball talent.”
The Silver Hawks take on the Bowling Green Hot Rods at 7:05p.m.
