Behind the Nose: Local family benefits from LOGAN

SOUTH BEND People throughout Michiana are familiar with LOGAN Center services, but not everyone has the same special connection to the organization as one family in South Bend.

"It's home for our family," said Annie Micinski, a South Bend mom who has been involved with LOGAN for more than 30 years.

"Jessie was diagnosed when she was about 9 months old with having a disability. It was her pediatrician who said to call LOGAN," said Micinski.

Annie's daughter, Jessie, started at LOGAN in a pre-school program when she was 3 years old. Since then, she's continued using therapeutic services, including volunteering with the organization.

"It's been 33 years as a parent involved with LOGAN," said Micinski, "and 28 years involved as an employee with LOGAN."

Annie is currently a Program Coordinator for the ADS West program at LOGAN, but says she's been in various roles during her two-decade tenure. She attributes her continued involvement to the staff and friendly nature of the facility.

"It's a place where you never stop learning," said Micinski. "It's also a place where you can be accepted for who you are."

Both Annie and her daughter attribute Jessie's social personality and many friends to LOGAN.

When asked her favorite part of LOGAN, Jessie responded, "meeting my friends."

"I don't think she would have developed the friendships she has," said Micinski. "The social things wouldn't be there, which are just so important for Jessie and her friends."

Families like Jessie and Annie benefit from LOGAN everyday, and the organization, which receives little federal or state funding, depends on donations from the community.
