Police arrested a babysitter after the death of an 18 month old boy under her supervision.
Monday, Dana Shell, 43, was charged with neglect of a dependent after a child at her daycare service died from positional asphyxia. On August 6, 2012, Warsaw Police responded to a 911 call when an 18 month old boy was found unresponsive and strapped in a car seat in a bedroom.
Emergency personnel took the child, Peyton Brettell, to Kosciusko Community Hospital, where efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
At the time Shell was operating an unlicensed childcare service in her home on the 900 block of S. Union Street in Warsaw. The initial information Shell provided to police was inconsistent with Peyton’s injuries.
An autopsy report done on August 7 ruled out accidental death. Instead, the Coroner said Peyton died from “positional asphyxia,” caused by being partially strapped into the child car seat inside Shell’s house.
Shell was booked at the Kosciusko County jail for the felony Neglect charge, and is being held on $50,000 bond. .
