SOUTH BEND, Ind. - St. Joseph County Metro Homicide announced at a press conference Wednesday afternoon that Shyheem Jones, 18, has been charged with the murder of a 19-year-old killed in a shooting Tuesday.
Police are still searching for Jones, who is from South Bend, and say he is considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information is asked to call Metro Homicide at 235-5009 or CrimeStoppers at 288-STOP.
According to investigators, Jones is aware police are searching for him but has not made any contact with authorities.
Police responded to a shooting around 7 p.m. Tuesday, after ShotSpotter detected gunfire in the 1800 block of Fremont Street. That's near the LaSalle Landing apartments.
Metro Homicide says Cornell Taylor, 19, was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he later died.
A second victim, a 20-year-old man, was treated and released.
Metro Homicide says the shooting apparently stemmed from an altercation that took place at a large gathering. Some witnesses were being uncooperative Tuesday night and had to be forcibly removed from the scene.
After exchanging heated words with officers, one young woman was handcuffed and taken away in a squad car for questioning. Police say she was later released.
"Emotions were running high, of course, and some people had to be physically removed by the officers up there so not to further contaminate the crime scene," said Lt. Dave Wells, assistant commander of the Metro Homicide Unit. "So that's one of our main priorities. We don't want people kicking shell casings or walking away with evidence."
"Getting tired of these shootings and nobody calling down here and helping us," Wells said. "We can't do this alone. We need people to come forward and help us, give us a name, call us at homicide, call CrimeStoppers, lead us in a direction where we can make an arrest and solve this."
