In a story we have been following for the past week, an attempt to override the Elkhart mayor’s veto of the city’s new sewer ordinance has failed.
Last week, Mayor Dick Moore vetoed the ordinance which was passed by the council with a 5-4 vote. The ordinance would have mandated that businesses outside the city limits pay a 15 percent surcharge for sewer services.
Moore says it doesn’t stand up legally and could cause funding problems for the city.
According to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth, the vote failed by a 5-3 vote on Monday night with one council member absent.
Moore plans to introduce another ordinance based on assessed value to the council in the coming months.
