South Bend, Ind. 20-year-old Domnik Kazmierczak suffered serious injuries in a motorcycle crash Sunday afternoon has passed away, according to friends and family members.
Police say Kazmierczak was taken to South Bend Memorial in critical condition after his motorcycle collided with a pick-up truck Sunday afternoon.
It happened at the intersection of Edison and Butternut Roads in South Bend.
Police say Kazmierczak was traveling westbound on Edison when he suddenly changed directions and started heading east.
Some witnesses say the motorcycle was speeding.
The female driver of a yellow pick-up truck was headed west and making a left turn on to Butternut Rd. when the motorcycle collided with the passenger side of the vehicle.
"According to the witnesses, she was going way below the speed limit just like she was making a left turn and probably did not know that that motorcycle was coming at her at a high rate of speed," said Major Patrolman Dean Chandler of the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Dept.
Some witnesses say the driver had to be pulled out from underneath the truck. The motorcycle landed on the opposite side of the road.
The driver was wearing a helmet -- but it was damaged during the accident.
Kazmierczak was taken by ambulance to South Bend Memorial. The driver of the pick-up truck was not injured.
Police believe speed was likely a factor in the accident.
Both drivers had their blood alcohol tested but police do not believe it played a role in the crash at this point in the investigation.
