Pedestrians struck by vehicle

A young boy and woman are recovering from serious injuries after being hit by a car while walking on South Bend's west side, and a drunk driver may be to blame.

The St. Joseph fatal alcohol crash team is investigating after 59-year-old Robert Kedik struck both pedestrians with his car in the 2900 block of Western around 7:45 Thursday night.

Three-year-old Alexis Garcilazo and 60-year-old Maria Ortiz were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries, but police say they are expected to survive.

Kedik was taken into custody until tests prove whether he had been drinking or not.
