Some residents were left in the dark for a couple of hours Sunday afternoon on South Bend’s west side.
About 2400 customers lost power just before 2pm.
A spokesperson for AEP said a squirrel hit a transformer and caused homes and businesses to lose power.
Employees at Martin's Super Market on Portage had an extra long break when the store shut down for approximately an hour and a half.
The store used a generator to run a few lights and keep some of the freezers going.
“[We]got the customers that were in the store through the check lanes and we closed the store down. The next thing we know we have to start covering up cases so we can keep everything cold as much as we can,” said Ray Bierbaum of Martin’s Super Market.
Power came back on around 3:30pm.
