A 30-year-old man has been found guilty of murdering an off-duty Monroe County jail officer who was fatally shot in 2005.

Monroe County jurors deliberated for about four hours Friday before finding Benjamin Steinberg guilty of the murder of Bill Brand. Steinberg's sentencing is scheduled for Nov. 20.

The maximum jail time for murder in Indiana is 65 years.

The 39-year-old Brand was driving his truck home to Bedford after leaving work in 2005 when he was fatally shot.

Defense attorneys argued there was no evidence linking Steinberg to Brand's murder. Prosecutors said Steinberg essentially admitted his involvement to his parents during phone calls from jail.
