The quarterback of a southern Indiana high school football team faces felony assault charges in the stabbing of a man during what police say was a fight over the player's ex-girlfriend.
The defense attorney for 18-year-old Zachary Donahue says he was acting in self defense. The Charlestown High School quarterback has pleaded not guilty in Clark Circuit Court.
Police say Donahue and 21-year-old Jonathan Westfall argued about the girl and agreed to meet for a fight early Saturday. Westfall told officers he arrived to find at least 10 people with Donahue and that he was hit with a bat and stabbed.
Police say Westfall suffered a chest wound and a partially collapsed lung.
School officials removed Donahue from the team, which plays Indiana Creek in a first-round sectional game Friday.
