Gary officials hope an announcement in Las Vegas next week means good news for the city's efforts to create a museum honoring native son Michael Jackson.

Mayor Rudy Clay says he'll attend a news conference planned for Wednesday but won't provide details. Las Vegas promoter Simon Sahouri says a plan to honor Jackson and his family in their hometown could be announced.

The Jackson family got its start in Gary, but efforts to create a museum and performing arts center have stalled for years. Interest picked up after Jackson's death June 25 as people from around the world traveled to see the small home where he grew up.

City consultant Linda Key says Gary could reap a "phenomenal" benefit from a museum and become a tourist destination for Jackson fans.
