Planned $500 bonus leaves some IU staff `furious'

A union leader says many Indiana University staffers are angry about a plan to give $500 bonuses to IU workers making $30,000 or less a year.

Last week, the IU Board of Trustees approved a salary freeze for nearly all IU employees, but the board also endorsed the one-time bonus for full-time staff making $30,000 a year or less.

Peter Kaczmarczyk of the Communications Workers of America says many long-time employees who aren't eligible for the $500 bonus are "just furious."

He and other union leaders will meet Friday with IU officials to ask that the bonus money be used instead for a small raise for all support staff on the Bloomington and IU Northwest campuses.
